At The End (rev. 2021)

for String Quintet

At the End presents an unsettling illustration of anxiety through its odd time signature and rhythmically offset melody, harmonies, and harsh pulse. This piece captures the repetitive cycle of desperation and imminence that happens because of anxiety through its oscillation between two chords, slowly building up tension and intensity until it finally reaches stability in the end. However, as a mirror of the stability at the beginning, the ending suggests that the cycle never ends, and the piece may be looped repeatedly.

This piece was played in a reading session by the Illinois Modern Ensemble.
