Collective Improvisations (2023 - 2024)
Improvised by:
Nicole Setiawan, violin
Jeremy Wong, violoncello
Joel Hoo, piano
I. Some Other Day:
Every person has an idea of the person they want to become in the future through their ambitions. Originally written as a track in Joel Hoo’s second album Our Future Memories, “Some Other Day” illustrates the narrative of that growing anticipation in the form of a slow-moving, pensive piece of music that is intensified through multilayered ebbs and flows. Growth is a gradual process, brought about by continuous cultivation. And as one continues their journey, they may be able to catch glimpses of what their future could become, but rather than be overcome by the expectations and pressures of one’s prospective aspirations, it is crucial to take this journey gradually and steadily, step by step.
II. Triumph:
Through moments of tension and release, “Triumph” reflects the highs and lows of the journey towards success and serves as a musical counterpart to the introspective journey depicted in the preceding improvisation. It illustrates and embodies the sense of achievement and fulfillment that comes with overcoming challenges and realizing one's aspirations. The music is vibrant and energetic, with each instrument contributing to a dynamic and ever-evolving interplay of melodies and rhythms. As the trio improvises together, there is a sense of unity and shared accomplishment, echoing the idea that success is often a collective effort.
