“Journey Home” (Prologue)
by John Paulo Legarte

Wonder abounds in horizonless exploration
Where we navigate the world flooding around us
In heavy city lights decorating the streetways spiraling

Into altered creation, the endless sunrises and sunsets
Blurring into the expanse of muted blue with imprinted
Starlight watching over us in restless abandon.

Familiar refuge burns somewhere in the distance as the
Distance we have travelled extends into years, our
Own familiarity with our identity flaming out into residual

Sparks seeking warmth again as we ourselves seek shelter
Lost amidst waves of conformity washing over the foundation
Still barely standing as illumination amidst lost muted blue.

Meanwhile, the intermittent breezes shoulder the
Contemplative yearnings for home again, our lives interwoven
Like the threads of fabric on our weathered clothing.

We sit together on the grass in this field and lose ourselves in
Infinite conversation with each other and the video calls with family
That light our faces softly under the imprinted starlight,

A familiar burning arising in the words of comfort and
The memories we share that pervade the air we breathe,
No longer restricted by physical space aging in passing time,

The journey home materialized all along in the people
Sparking the embers of joy and refuge no matter the depth
Of distance that surrounds us under imprinted starlight.
