Will-o'-the-Wisp (2023)
for Chamber Orchestra
This piece was written for the Midwest Philharmonic Orchestra.
Will-o’-the-Wisp guides the listener through two contrasting realms: first through the dark and mysterious depths of a forest, where the ghost-like will-o’-the-wisp casts its enchanting light, before emerging into the ethereal and serene realm of an idyllic utopia.
I. Phantom
In the first movement, the music draws inspiration from the elusive and entrancing phenomenon of the will-o’-the-wisp, often associated with flickering lights in the depths of dark forests that lead wanderers astray. The atmosphere of this movement is mysterious and unsettling with uneven time signatures in the fast sections coupled with haunting melodies and intricate textures in the slow sections that evoke the feeling of enchantment and secrets within a mystical woodland.
II. Elysium
The second movement provides a juxtaposition to the mystical nature of the previous movement. Here, the composition transforms into a slow and melodic soundscape that evokes a utopian realm of tranquility and beauty. Gentle and flowing melodies soar above lush harmonies, painting a picture of a serene and idyllic paradise. This movement exudes a sense of contentment and wonder, inviting the listener to bask in the euphoria of this utopian vision.
